In collaboration with the International Studies and Security Research Association (UÇGA) and the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Başkent University, the Security Studies Workshop will be held in Bodrum/Muğla, between October 26–29, 2023, hosted by Bodrum+ Institute.

VENUE

The Security Studies Workshop will take place at the Gümüşlük Academy Foundation facilities (Gümüşlük, Ahmet Yesevi St. No:11, 48970 Bodrum/Muğla).

WHO CAN APPLY?

Applicants to the Security Studies Workshop must be either:

  • PhD students studying in Turkey in the field of Political Science and/or International Relations (including related subfields such as Security Studies or Terrorism Studies), and/or
  • Early-career researchers who have completed their PhD (within ten years prior to the application date) and are conducting research on Security and Terrorism.

Applicants meeting these criteria may apply until September 15, 2023.

HOW TO APPLY?

Applications will be collected via Google Forms until September 15, 2023.

Applicants must be registered in TÜBİTAK’s ARBIS system.

Applicants are required to submit a two-page statement of purpose and a CV.
The statement of purpose should include:

  • the title, abstract, objectives, literature review, methodology, findings, innovations, and contributions of their research (related to Security Studies),
  • and an explanation of which thematic group they wish to join and why.

All applications will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee.

The expenses of participants and instructors (transportation, accommodation, meals, stationery, etc.) will be covered under TÜBİTAK’s 2237-A Support Program for Scientific Education Activities.

However, due to inflation differences after the initial budget approval, participants are required to make a cash contribution of 1500 TL to cover the balance of inflation-related costs. This payment will be made in cash upon arrival in Bodrum before the program begins.

PURPOSE OF THE EVENT

The Security Studies Workshop aims to enhance the theoretical and practical research and training capacities of PhD students and early-career researchers working in the fields of Political Science and/or International Relations (including related areas such as Security Studies and Terrorism Studies).

The workshop provides a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary platform for participants to engage with experts and peers, fostering an academic network among researchers working on similar topics.

By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to have strengthened their research and educational capacities in the following key areas:

Identifying research gaps, engaging in contemporary debates, and fostering ideas for joint projects and publications.

Building an academic network and increasing interaction and knowledge exchange between experts and early-career scholars.

Identifying gaps in current national and international literature and encouraging research in these areas.

Receiving feedback from peers, expert academics, and experienced professionals to improve research quality and publication potential.

Developing critical thinking and analytical skills in early-career researchers.

Enhancing argumentation and analytical abilities to engage in in-depth discussions on current issues in the field.

TOPIC, SCOPE, AND STRUCTURE OF THE EVENT

The Security Studies Workshop is designed as an educational activity emphasizing mutual interaction and feedback across the themes described below.

Within the framework of the stated goals, the three-day in-person workshop will include the following thematic and structural components:

  • Participants whose applications are accepted will be divided into two classes and four groups based on four main themes.
  • With TÜBİTAK’s support, parallel group sessions will be held over three days, featuring instructor presentations, participant presentations, feedback sessions, and thematic discussions.
  • On the first day, introductory sessions will provide overviews of selected themes, summarizing the relevant academic literature and highlighting current debates in Turkey and worldwide. Expert instructors will also deliver educational presentations on the latest developments in the field.
  • On the second and third days, participants will present their work, engage in discussions, and receive direct feedback from peers and instructors. Each participant will have two academic hours for their session. The goal is to refine participants’ research and enhance its potential for publication in high-impact journals.
