Environment and Sustainability Summer School – 3

Bodrum+ Institute invites you to the pearl of the Aegean, Bodrum, for the Third Environment and Sustainability Summer School. Garaova Agricultural Park will be the address for trainings that will bring participants together with nature.
The “Environment and Sustainability Summer School – 3” (ESS-3) will be a practice-intensive training program, and students who complete the summer school will receive a Certificate of Participation.
The summer school will begin on Sunday afternoon with the gathering of participants. Students will stay in tents. Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be included in the program. The program will end on the following Friday afternoon (August 30th).
ESS-3 summer school has a participation fee of EUR 300 (for students who study in Türkiye: 10.500 TL) (a scholarship of 25% will be granted to the students) to cover administrative, logistical, and stationery expenses. You will not pay any additional fees for accommodation expenses. You are responsible for your own travel expenses to Bodrum, allowing you to choose your preferred mode of transportation.
Unfortunately, only a limited number of students will experience the unique privilege of taking lessons amidst the natural beauty of Bodrum due to our limited capacity. If you want to share this incredible experience, embark on ideas beyond classical education, and forge new friendships, we recommend applying without delay.
DETAILS:
The program will include theoretical and practical themes on environmental and sustainability topics.
You will engage in courses covering crucial topics such as ecology, climate change, energy transition, forest fires, biodiversity and so on. These subjects are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and solutions in environmental sustainability, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a positive impact.
This summer school is open to all students and researchers from all fields who are interested.

How Will Applications Be Evaluated?
Due to our limited capacity, acceptances will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis.
CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY:
If you wish to cancel your application at least fifteen (15) days before the start of the training, you can receive a refund of the training fee without any deduction other than legal obligations (such as taxes, fees, etc). If you wish to make the cancellation less than fifteen (15) days before the start of the training, no refund is possible.

Prof. Hilal Özdağ Sevgili
Prof. Özdağ Sevgili took her BSc in Biology from Hacettepe University Department of Biology in 1993. She then got her MSc in Biotechnology from the same department in 1995. She got her PhD from Bilkent University Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2000. Her PhD dissertation was on Hereditary Breast Cancer Genetics in the Turkish Population. Prof. Özdağ Sevgili then moved to the UK for her postdoctoral studies. As a postdoctoral research associate at Prof. Caldas’s Laboratory at Cambridge University Hutchison-MRC Research Centre, she worked on chromatin modifier genes in epithelial cancers.
Prof. Özdağ Sevgili has been leading her research group since 2005 at Ankara University Biotechnology Institute, Systems Biotechnology Advanced Research Unit (SISBIOTEK), with the support of TÜBİTAK, Ankara University’s Scientific Research Projects Directorate, the National Boron Institute, COST and the International Atomic Energy Agency. In this context, the team carries out projects that include genome and transcriptome analyses aiming to define new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for cancer, which is characterised as one of the most critical threats to human health according to the World Health Organization statistics and stands out with its multifactorial and multigenic characteristics. Population genomics and stem cell biology are also within the team’s areas of interest and research. Identifying new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that will be patentable information and in line with the missions of the Biotechnology Institute requires the coordinated work of clinical and basic sciences.
Prof. Hasan Sevgili
Prof. Hasan Sevgili has been conducting research projects on the biodiversity of Turkey’s Orthoptera. Orthopteroid species are very successful in communicating by calling songs and are model organisms, especially for behavioural and evolutionary ecological studies. In this context, he has conducted taxonomic and behavioural ecological studies on the Isophya, Poecilimon and Phonochorion species in Turkey, which are short-winged plump-green bush crickets. These genera have many endemic species, most sensitive to environmental changes (climate change, habitat destruction, etc.). He continues to conduct extensive research on the bioacoustic diversity of Orthoptera species. Speciation and biogeography of bush crickets are also research topics.
His research portfolio also focuses on the intriguing reproductive behaviour of bush crickets. He has tested various hypotheses about how males invest spermatophores and sperm in females, demonstrating his diverse research interests and expertise.
Prof. Sevgili’s interdisciplinary approach is further demonstrated in his work on eco-immunological research, particularly on the Thermal melanisation hypothesis. By considering the strategies of males and females on immune and reproductive investments together in the cost-benefit trade-off, he has made significant contributions to this field.
He has also been working on the critical soil organisms of Collembola fauna in recent years.
Prof. Çağatay Tavşanoğlu
Prof. Çağatay Tavşanoğlu completed his Ph.D. in ecology in 2008 at Hacettepe University, Türkiye. His research fields include fire ecology, plant ecology, and functional ecology. He is currently a faculty member in the Ecology Division of the Department of Biology at Hacettepe University. Prof. Tavşanoğlu continues to conduct research projects with his team on the ecological dynamics of Mediterranean and Anatolian steppe ecosystems and the environmental impacts of climate change. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in ecology and environmental sciences.
Assoc. Prof. Yasemin Güler
Assoc. Prof. Yasemin Güler graduated from Hacettepe University, Department of Biology, in 1993. She got her master’s degree with the thesis titled “Systematical Studies on Subfamily Braconinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in Ankara Province” at the Institute of Science of the same university. Then, she also completed her PhD thesis entitled “Systematical Studies on Family Megachilidae (Hymenoptera) in Middle Anatolian Region with the Application of Biochemical and Morphometrical Methods in Problematic Groups” in 2004 at Hacettepe University. Between 1995 and 2004, she worked as a Research Assistant at Hacettepe University, Department of Biology. She has worked as a pollinator bee expert at the Plant Protection Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry since 2004. Dr. Güler carries out research projects on bee diversity, nesting biology, plant-pollinator relationships, and parasitoid wasps.
Assoc. Prof. Kahraman İpekdal
Kahraman İpekdal completed his PhD in ecology in 2012 at Hacettepe University, Türkiye, and the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment, France. His research fields include ecology and genetics of forest pest insects. He is currently a faculty member in the Ecology Division of the Department of Biology at Hacettepe University. He conducts research projects on biological control of the Asian chestnut gall wasp and phylogeography of the pine processionary moth funded by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the Turkish General Directorate of Forestry and the University of Padova. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on ecology.
Orçun Demir, PhD. (C)
Orçun Demir is currently pursuing his PhD in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at TOBB University of Economics and Technology, where he also works as a Research Assistant. His doctoral thesis focuses on the renewable energy transition in developing countries, and he conducted related fieldwork in Poland from February to July 2024. Additionally, he serves as an administrative assistant at Bodrum+ Institute.
Orçun Demir graduated from Ege University, Department of International Relations. During his undergraduate studies, he participated in an exchange program at the Department of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen (Norway). He completed his master’s degree in the International Relations Program at TOBB University of Economics and Technology. He has also worked on numerous projects under TÜBİTAK and Erasmus+ within the Bodrum+ Institute. His general research areas include international political economy, energy security, renewable energy, environment, and sustainable development. He also has studies on the use of green hydrogen and the governance of renewable energy transitions.
